PHOTOS: Tina Turner in Las Vegas through the years
LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) - Tina Turner, singer and performer known across the world over several decades, passed away Tuesday, May 23 at the age of 83.
Like many stars, Turner took to the stage in Las Vegas during her career. The Las Vegas News Bureau provided photos of her career when she was in town from the 1970s onward.
Turner and then-husband Ike Turner headlined from 1973 to 1976 at the now-Westgate Hotel.
After years of physical and emotional abuse, Turner left her husband, relying on food stamps to survive. From 1978 to 1979, Turner returned to the Las Vegas stage for a triumphant solo encore.
“The stage was a place she could be whoever she wanted to be. She was from the South, went through abuse-- not just in her relationship, but this was during the time women didn’t have rights and weren’t accepted,” said vocalist and performer Skye Dee Miles.
Miles wrapped up a six-month headlining residency at The Palms, back in February. Miles performs at Easy at the Aria from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Saturdays, and occasionally performs at Mondays Dark.
“When I came to Vegas, there wasn’t anyone that looks like me. I want to be one of the ones that leaves her history,” Miles said, recognizing the other African American women who graced the stage through the decades.
